Cdr Grant Goodell USN (retd)
“My rank and call sign was Ltjg. H. G. "Sparky" Goodell off the USS Antietam (CVA 36) in fighter squadron VF 713 US Naval Reserve.
On November 8, 1951 I ditched a Corsair (F4U 4) in Wonsan Harbour, North
Korea. I was off the carrier USS Antietam and had my right oil cooler shot out
with what was probably a 20 mm. Lost oil pressure immediately although the prop
continued to windmill. Took 8 HVAR, 500 lb GP bomb and a nearly full belly tank
in with me, canopy open, full flaps, tail hook down, about 400 yards from beach.
They chased me out of my raft with small arms which were splashing all around
like rain.
The aircraft stalled into the water and, having already released my harness, caused me to get a face full of instrument panel. There were houses and sampans on beach, and people in blue suits firing at me. The remaining 3 planes of my division flew at about 500 ft. over the beach starting RESCAP. Eventually I was rescued by USN Helicopter.”
